 ‘Ātui’anga ki te Tango - January 2021

Senior students of Kōrero o te 'Ōrau's 'Ātui’anga ki te Tango school holiday programme.  This programme was made possible by the support of the UNESCO 2018 Participation Programme and Nia Tero, as well as parents and volunteers who believe in the objectives in connecting our children to their natural environment and cultural heritage.

UNESCO PROGRAMME: 'Ātui'anga ki te Tango

Date: 19 July – 3 August 2019

Location: Rarotonga, Cook Islands

 

Twelve students will be selected for the program, which will be determined by a selection panel. Students will then be put into four groups of three for the duration of the program.  Throughout the two-week period, each group is required to document their activities each day, which will be published as a children’s booklet at a later date in both Māori and English.

 

FRIDAY, 19 JULY

Venue:  St. Joseph’s Hall

SATURDAY, 20 JULY

Venue:  Cook Islands Red Cross Facility, Matavera

  • 9 am – 3 pm       CPR & First Aid Training (students and instructors)

 

MONDAY, 22 JULY

  • 8:30 am               Lecture on Traditional knowledge & climate change

  • 9:00 am               Lecture on Ciguatera Poisoning

  • 9:45 am               Break

  • 10:00 am             Lecture on coral reef ecosystems and species identification

  • 10:30 am             Concept design for a simple reef booklet for schools (e.g., Junior level)

  • 12:00 pm             Snorkeling field trip with Grete Marsters (high tide @ 2pm)

  • 2:00 pm               Work on reef booklet (e.g., sort pictures)

  • 4:30 pm               Recap and close

 

TUESDAY, 23 JULY

  • 8:30 am               Continue work on reef booklet for schools

  • 9:30 am               Lecture on tuna fishing (Sonny Tatuava from MMR)

  • 10:30 am             Reef survey field trip; incoming tide @ 11am

  • 1:30 pm               Data input and analysis

  • 2:30 pm               Work on booklet for reef survey trip

  • 4:30 pm               Recap and close

 

WEDNESDAY, 24 JULY

  • 8:00 am               Prepare for reef fishing and drop stone fishing for tuna the next day

  • 9:30 am               Fishing activities (takiri patuki, kimi eke…etc.)  Low tide @ 10am

  • 11:30 pm             Clean fish and tunutunu on beach

  • 1:30 pm               Work on booklet

  • 4:30 pm               Recap and dismiss

 

THURSDAY, 25 JULY

  • 7:00 am               Dropstone fishing for tuna @ FAD (plan B will be bottom fishing on fore reef)

  • 2:30 pm               Work on booklet

  • 4:30 pm               Recap and dismiss

 

FRIDAY, 26 JULY

  • 8:30 am               Lecture on Raui and MPA

  • 10:00 am             Work on booklet

  • 11:00 am             Recap & dismiss

  • 5:30 pm               Prepare for night exploration of the reef (low tide @9 pm)

  • 10:00 pm             Dismiss

 

SATURDAY, 27 JULY

  • 8:30 am               Work on booklet

  • 4:30 pm               Lecture on traditional fishing methods

  • 5:30 pm               Preparation for Manga fishing; some materials needed

  • 1:00 pm               Dismiss

  • 6:00 pm               Meet again for Manga fishing (plan B will be Kū fishing on the fore reef)

 

MONDAY, 29 JULY

  • 8:30 am               Lecture on slopeland and cloud forest ecosystems (Joe Brider)

  • 9:30 am               Hike to a site for basic plant ID and survey

  • 2:00 pm               Data analysis and interpretation

  • 3:00 pm               Work on Booklet

TUESDAY, 30 JULY

  • 8:30 am               Wetland functions with field trip to Takuvaine Valley for Utu planting

  • 9:30 am               Wet-taro planting

  • 2:00 pm               Fore reef snorkeling / Tītomo

  • 4:00 pm               Work on booklet

  • 4:30pm                Recap and dismiss

 

WEDNESDAY, 31 JULY

  • 8:30 am               Presentation on the importance of Vairakau Māori (Teariki Rongo & Charles Koronui)

  • 9:30 am               Field trip – collect the ingredients needed (Ta’unga Vairakau: Mrs Ngapoko Marsters)

  • 10:30 am             Making various Vairakau Māori

  • 2:00pm                Work on booklet

  • 4:30 pm               Recap and dismiss

  • 6:00 pm               Introduction to traditional navigation with Voyaging Society

  • 8:30 pm               Stargazing

 

THURSDAY, 1 AUGUST

  • 8:30 am              Continue with voyaging

  • 9:30 am              Trip on the vaka

  • 3:00 pm              Work on booklet

  • 4:30 pm              Recap and dismiss

 

FRIDAY, 2 AUGUST

  • 8:30 am               Work on booklet

  • 10:00 am             Catching chicken; trap making with Jason Tuara

SATURDAY, 3 AUGUST

  • 6:30 am               Light umu

  • 9:00 am               Put umu down

  • 10:00 am             Singing, drumming, and relaxing at beach
