OPERATION TARAMEA

In 2020, we first discovered the outbreak on the leeward side Rarotonga. Our NGO, Kōrero o te ‘Ōrau - with the lead scientist, Dr. Teina Rongo, and numerous volunteers - took action to remove taramea and save our reefs. If no action was taken, Rarotonga’s reefs would have followed the same fate as the two previous outbreaks, where the entire reef was decimated.
