'Atui'anga ki te tango translates to connecting to your foundation. Your foundation is your culture and natural environment. This is a programme that engages both senior and junior students, taking them into their backyards for a hands-on experience. Children explore, learn, feel, and connect with their surroundings and traditional practices, blending modern science with indigenous knowledge and customs.
SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAMME
Throughout the year, we run enriching, week-long school holiday programmes designed to connect our tamariki and māpu with their environment, culture, and identity in meaningful, hands-on ways.
JUNIOR PROGRAMME
Junior Programme (Ages 6–12)
Our junior programme is fun-filled and culturally immersive. Tamariki explore the natural world around them while learning traditional knowledge through exciting activities. They will:
• Learn the names of local fish species
• Sing traditional and Māori imene
• Go fishing and help prepare a umu
• Play traditional Māori games
• Take part in creative, engaging activities that foster teamwork and curiosity
SENIOR PROGRAMME
Senior Programme (Ages 13+)
The senior programme goes deeper, offering a more intensive and adventurous experience. Our māpu engage in a blend of indigenous knowledge and scientific learning, including:
• Ocean exploration and marine studies
• Stargazing and navigation
• Traditional voyaging
• Diving and environmental awareness
Students are encouraged to camp with us during the programme, as many activities happen late at night or early in the morning. This not only enhances their experience but also strengthens friendships and builds a sense of community among participants.
